This, in turn, emboldened opposition Presidential candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, to declare victory. The ball is now in the military's court; it shouldn't be but that's how it is in a dictatorship with a democratic facade, the men with the guns control things. Here's hoping that they accept reality and let the changes ring out as the old song goes.
Robert Mugabe is in many ways a tragic figure. When he first appeared on the world stage, he looked like a breath of fresh air among African leaders: bright, well-educated and gifted. Unfortunately, the promising young leader had a paranoid streak as big as Shaquile O'Neal and he became another strong man. It all goes to show what a truly remarkable man Nelson Mandela is: he left power gracefully and with his reputation enhanced.
