YOU BETCHA

posted Friday, 3 October 2008

I have a hard time analyzing Sarah Palin because I find her deeply twitty and annoying but I have a quick and dirty Veep joint appearance report card:

BIDEN: He started off slowly. He was way too Senatorial for the first half but warmed to the task and had a very solid second half. His strategy was to talk about McCain and Bush and to only address Palin when necessary. It was a solid strategy; there's that word again, solid.

He did very well on the foreign policy questions; no surprise there. One of his strongest moments was when he slam dunked Palin's wacko notion of an expanded constitutional role for the Vice President. A scary idea in the post-Cheney world. All in all, it was a solid performance. ADRASTOS GRADE: SOLID B

PALIN: She bugs the crap out of me with her cute folksiness and dopey expressions. All she did was barf back talking points and repeat herself over and over again. She tends to speak in non-sequiturs; stringing together random phrases and buzz words: maverick, greed, corruption, reform, you betcha.

Palin seemed overly caffeinated. She was frenetic and toon-like at times. She talked so fast that I thought she was PBJ's dimwitted country cousin. Like all winger pols, she tries to imitate Reagan but fails miserably. Reagan was a movie star with a melodious voice that he knew how to use to great effect. Palin's attempts at Reaganesque moments are undermined by her annoying accent and inability to speak in complete sentences.

On the plus side for Palin, she didn't crash and burn but the threshold for her was painfully low. I don't think she did anything to advance the McCainiac cause but she put a tourniquet on her self inflicted wounds and reduced the bleeding for now.

Finally, Palin looks good on camera and has much better hair than Joe Biden. ADRASTOS GRADE: TWITTY C-

Biden did fine. Certainly he performed far better than Obama did in the first debate vs McCain which I maintain that Obama lost BIG TIME.

I have the same problem that a lot of people have with Stupid. I have such a visceral reaction to her obvious stink of evil that I have a hard time judging her performance.

The thing I keep coming back to with regard to this election is that people are going to believe what they want to believe and vote based on what they have decided to believe. I believe that most of the people deciding what they want to believe are mean and stupid. I think that the majority of voters will side with the mean and stupid ticket this year regardless of the campaign dynamics from this point forward. I'll talk more about that in the coming weeks.

Bur for tonight... I personally think that Biden made her look every bit as stupid as she is. But Pat Buchanan says she was "spectacular" Thus it's okay for the mean and stupid people to stay behind her.

So it goes.

If the previous comment appears to be of Palin-esque coherence... you can blame the drinking game. We drank every time she winked and when either of them said "Gwen"

Well there you go again, criticizing a woman just 'cuz she hunts to put meat on the table.

I think she could have beaten Joe Biden arm wrestling. That would at least have been more entertaining. Gwen Ifill, who's cosmopolitan civility is charming in most circumstances, was a terrible choice to moderate.

I cann;\'t believe that the O/B camp would agree to that format; with not follow-up questions. Gwen Ifle was usless though. Maybe she got the memo from WWLTV- "What would Lucy do?

I remember how Frances McDormand's Maude Gunderson character on Fargo annoyed me, but she was the heroine in the flick. By the end of the movie I liked Maude, with her down home values, her honesty, her doggedness to get to the truth. Palin is Maude Gunderson. Don't underestimate her, Adrastos. She may annoy you, but she connects with middle America in ways that you and the blogosphere will never understand.

Ricardo: I thought of Lucy as well.

MAD: Actually, I liked the character of Marge in Fargo immediately. I think Palin's style is something that people either love or hate. In the long run it doesn't matter: people don't vote for the Veep and early surveys among undecided independent voters don't show any movement in either direction after last night.

Of course Moose-olini has better hair than Biden. Biden's is a plug job, for crying out loud! It's as fake as Sarah's shout-outs to third-graders.

Many years ago, when Imus was still funny, he referred to the Senator from Delaware as "a human Chia Pet". Mercifully, the state of the art in plugs has advanced considerably since then.
