One of Dr. A's bosses has started reading the blog, which is flattering but the heat is now on. Dr. M asked Dr. A the other day when I was going to write another serious post about the mess at the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office. I hope that this post meets with Dr. M's approval but, quite frankly, I've written so much about Eddie Jordan that I'm burnt out on the subject. Well, here goes nothing:
Eddie Jordan himself seems to be the only one who's doing well in the wake of his resignation. Apparently, some local fat cats may have helped him secure employment in the "private sector." Details are sketchy as to whether this is for real or merely speculative because so much smoke is being blown up the public's ass right now; especially by the man who my friend Liprap calls the "walking id," Mayor Nagin. C Ray has taken 7 or 8 positions as to what the city plans to do in the wake of Slow Eddie's uncharacteristically hasty retreat so his plans are quite deliberately murky. BUT it's clear that the city is going to try to find someone else to foot the bill and there are no takers thus far. The Mayor implied at Tuesday's press event that some bidness leaders would help pay the judgment but that was another whopper from the mouth of our "reform" Mayor. What to do? What to do? What to do?
The plaintiff's attorneys appear to be in the catbird seat right now but their position is also somewhat precarious. It's obvious that seizing the DA office's assets will not be lucrative so a settlement would appear to be in order BUT who do they have to negotiate with? The Mayor is pointing at lame duck Governor Meemaw who is keeping her head down and her proverbial powder dry and incoming Goober PBJ is mum as well. Council President Arnie Fielgood is leery of entering into a settlement out of a fear of what he calls "opening a legal Pandora's box." I guess Arnie has his hands full with the scary harridans named Cynthia on the Council and wants to avoid meeting Pandora. I hear she's scarier with her snaky hair than Windy-Lewis or Hedgehog-Morrell combined. What to do? What to do? What to do?
There is one comic aspect to the Jordan resignation: Dollar Bill's reaction. The Klepto Congressman has assured us that he had nothing to do with the mass firings that led to Slow Eddie's disgrace and that they were not discriminatory. Yeah, right. I think he's seizing on the fact that Stephanie Butler was on leave from his staff when she wielded the hatchet on South White Street BUT the Jefferson machine is like the mob: once you're in, they never let you go. I've heard from a reliable source that Dollar Bill advised Jordan to quit last week because Jefferson was afraid that the mess would splatter all over Princess Jalila Jeff-Bull's runoff campaign for the State Senate. Personally, I hope and expect that that will happen. Dollar Bill's power is on the wane and I think Jalila is going down to defeat.
The one positive sign for the DA's office is interim boss Keva Landrum Johnson; of whom nary a discouraging word has been heard thus far. I'm also hoping that there won't be an election for a permanent DA until next October. The last thing the office needs right now is more politics; especially since the Jefferson camp's determination to play patronage politics was what got us into this mess. I wish Ms. Landrum Johnson well; if nothing else, she knows she's in a hole and will stop digging. Slow Eddie appeared determined to dig his way to Hades and he seems to have gotten his way.
Finally, another tenuously connected musical tribute to the post-Jordan mess. The ball is in the court of the lawyers right now: I'm skeptical that public opinion will matter to the plaintiff's attorneys as much as the likes of Clancy (CW) Dubos seem to think. The plaintiffs want their money and their lawyers want their fees and, unless they plan to run for office, they don't give a rat's ass what the likes of Clancy think. Anyway, here's David Lindley with his boffo tune, Talk To The Lawyer. Btw, if you want to skip the stage patter (it does, however, include a Jimmy Swaggart impression) the music starts at 2:15:
I suppose there's some reason Slow Eddie can't be held personally
responsible? Even in part?
He wasn't a named defendant. I believe it was our old pal, sovereign
immunity.
He still has not resigned
Dollar Bill should pony up the 3.7
Swampwoman, my husband agrees wholeheartedly with your take on the
situation. Bill's got to have some more cold hard cash stored in other
freezers across this land, right?
If Slow Eddie wasn't named as defendant, who was? The DA's office? The
State of Louisiana? If it was either o fthose, sovereign immunity would
have been somehow put aside for the suit to go forward. Hmmm... Does the
State now have a cause of action against Slow Eddie?
