Walnuts surrogate Holy Joe Lieberman is in a race to the bottom of the barrel. Here's what he said in York, Pa yesterday: "And in my opinion, the choice could not be more clear; between one candidate, John McCain, who has experience and has been tested in war and tried in peace, and another candidate that has not. Between one candidate, John McCain, who has always put his country first, worked across party lines to get things done, and one candidate that has not."
The McCain campaign has endorsed this swipe at Obama's "Americanism." So much for not questioning Obama's patriotism. The McCain line is identical to the garbage Mark Penn tried peddling to Hillary Clinton: he's foreign, strange, not a real American. To her credit, Clinton didn't peddle this rubbish, she has some standards. John McCain has none.
At some point the McCainiacs decided that the only way McCain could win was via mutually assured destuction: wrecking Obama's reputation and emerging as the lesser of two evils. McCain should remember that Bush the elder and younger were both elected using scorched earth tactics. It worked during the 1988 and 2004 election cycles BUT the father was defeated for re-election and the son will leave office as one of the most unpopular Presidents ever. Playing to the baser instincts of your base means that you forfeit the good will that people usually have towards their President. When you're in trouble, the public flips you the bird instead of throwing a lifeline.
I'm particularly perturbed by Joe Lieberman's role in this; not because I have a high opinion of him BUT because there are many in the Republican base who consider Jews to be "not one of us." I also take this personally. I'm a second generation American who has relatives with skin as dark as Barack Obama's and who grew up eating funny food and whose late father (a Republican btw) spoke <shudder> a foreign language fluently. I'm obviously "not one of us" either and by Lieberman's standards neither was my super-patriot father who was a World War II veteran. I think the classic Herblock cartoon of Richard Nixon coming out of the sewer should be updated just for Holy Joe.
