The Labyrinth At Audubon Park/Pothole Art In Broadmoor

posted Monday, 17 April 2006

Item-1: The Labyrinth At Audubon Park:
Yesterday Dr. A wanted to see the dedication of the labyrinth and I'm a big softie where she's concerned so we braved the dust and oak pollen and went to the park. My late mother-in-law, Eileen, was into all things spirtual and meditative so Dr. A wanted to get in touch with her inner Eileen. I'm the least new agey person around but a bit of contemplation never hurt anybody; except for those whiny and cranky hippies, Aras and Courtney, on Survivor: Panama.

In the park, we ran into an old friend, the gifted photog, George Long, who has documented the labyrinth from its inception. It was our very own version of "Sunday In The Park With George" only without the Seurat dots or Sondheim tunes. George's charming significant other, Sarah, was videotaping the ceremony, which was mercifully brief. Even the curate of the Cathedral at Chartres was concise. I like short speeches, y'all. They needed to be brief because a group of bikers rode by at full throttle during Archbishop Emeritus Phillip Hannan's little talk. <rev, rev, rev>

The funniest lines about the
labyrinth came not from Mr. Skeptical Agnostic Blogger but from Dr. A. She said that Jay Batt probably helped them get a permit because he thought it was a bar. Then, after hearing folks who had helped sponsor the benches around the labyrinth speak, Dr. A whispered in my ear, "The Batt family motto: bottoms up."  My smart-assery has really rubbed off on her. I am a proud spousal unit, y'all. I was the one, however, who asked where the hell Thomas Hobbes was...

Item-2 Pothole Art In Broadmoor: There's a great piece by my e-pal and Krewe du Vieux Dowager Queen Lynne Jensen in this morning's Picayune about a Broadmoor couple who have decorated a pothole at the corner of Upperline and South Miro Streets. Local survivors and wags Carey Herman and Paul Rogers call it the Broadmoor Green Space Migratory Bird Refuge and Wetlands Reclamation Project.

This art installation cum bird refuge could give a whole new meaning to the city's adopt-a-pothole program. Well done, y'all.

Dear Adrastos,

I'm glad we've got a new labyrinth, I guess, but I knd of hated to see the old one go, the one made of plants and grass, always teetering on a return to the jungle.

Question: Is this a religious "installation", and, if so, how did it get into a public park?

Best --

Bruce

It's Gorilla Ron's park. Where the hell did you get the idea it was public? Bow down to the simian messiah, dude...
