GRET STET CAMPAIGN ADS

posted Tuesday, 21 August 2007

Sometime while I was in England the Governor's campaign revved up. The air war has begun: bombs away. Front runner Bobby Jindal has an attack ad that his people think is funny because it features clowns in big shoes. (Neither Krusty nor Chuckles is anywhere in evidence.) It goes to show what happens when a humorless candidate tries to be zany. The ad isn't up on YouTube as of yet so follow this link to see it.

I started off making fun of D. Walter Boasso but I'm increasingly impressed with his candidacy. He comes off as a regular guy kind of tycoon, which is a refreshing contrast to Jindal's pious smarminess.  (The other rich guy in the race, John Georges, comes off as an arrogant know it all.) I was also pleased to see the following ad wherein Boasso ties Jindal to Bush and supports bringing the troops home from Iraq:

The most effective ads thus far have been some anti-Jindal ads run by the Louisiana Democratic party. The first one is an outstanding example of the attacker's dark art entitled Coronation:

The second ad put on by the Democratic party is less artistic but potentially more effective. It's been on the air in heavily Protestant North Louisiana and paints Jindal as an intolerant Catholic wingnut:

This ad already has Jindal's handlers squealing like stuck pigs. Here's a link to their feeble and whiny initial counterattack. The Dems also have a web site that goes into more details about Pious Jindal's religiosity. LINK. I particularly enjoyed the bit where Jindal describes non-Catholic Christians as "depraved." Jindal's views seem to be straight out of the Opus Dei playbook. Attaboy, Bobby, there's nothing like a convert for fanatical devotion to the Pope. Nobody expects the Jindal inquisition...

Jindal is still the heavy favorite but his attempt to sit on his lead and run out the political clock is already causing him problems. It couldn't happen to a smarmier guy. Let the games begin...

WEDNESDAY UPDATE: The Picayune had a piece with a stronger pushback from the Republican camp about the religion ad. LINK. Oyster weighed in as well. He's skeptical of the claims. LINK.

Yeah. I read the article he wrote when he was young (can't remember who linked to the PDF). It was waaaaay out there. Worse, it was very badly written.

Who in the hell convinced Jindal's campaign that that clown ad would strike home for anyone other than people with the most bland, colorless lives......oh, wait--that would be his base, wouldn't it?
