CHARLIE FOTI: THE AMBULANCE CHASER'S BEST FRIEND

The Picayune was all over the Memorial Hospital story this morning. It sounds as if every personal injury shyster lawyer in the country will be swarming around potential litigants who had relatives at Memorial during the great deluge. It's gonna be like Bhopal on the bayou or a re-run of the Kenner airplane crash gold rush in 1982. Hmm, maybe we can get John Fogerty to write some new lyrics for "Born On The Bayou." Nah, I'm sure he's got better things to do than to sing: Bhopal on the bayou...
I was pleased that the Gray Lady published several strongly worded articles in defense of Dr. Anna Pou including a nuanced analysis of the ethical issues involved. The consensus seems to be that she was one of the heroes of the immediate post-K period as well as having been one of the last docs to leave Memorial. Most significantly, Dr. Pou's chairman at LSU Med School has risen to her defense. Attaboy, Dr. Nuss.
Now that I've defended Dr. Pou and mocked Charlie Foti and the Morris Barts of the world, I do think that there are probably some valid causes of action against Memorial Hospital's soon to be former operator, Tenet. The hospital supposedly had a hurricane plan and failed to implement it, which sounds like negligence to me. Of course, there was a whole lotta incompetence going on in these parts last fall: name an institution and they screwed up. Call it pin the tail on the incompetent; a game that we could play for hours and hours and hours...
