You can almost smell the fear today both on Wall Street and in the McCain campaign. The Republican National Committe is joining in the fear fest and is running a "Bill Ayers is the boogie man and Barack Obama's buddy" ad. I'm not going to post it but here's a LINK. This fear mongering *could* have an effect among the Republican base BUT it's just the sort of thing that Independent and moderate voters despise.
It's also unclear as to whether McCain is capable of sticking to a message long enough for it to have an impact. One day it's Bill Ayers, the next day it's Fannie-n-Freddie, Chris-n-Barney and pretty soon it will be Peter, Paul and Mary. Some people detect a "connect the dots" strategy whereby the McCainiacs will tie all the threads together but I see a desperate campaign that cannot get its message together. Campaigns take on the nature of the candidate, which is why the McCain camp is frenetic and erratic and the Obama camp is cool, calm and collected. Winning campaigns don't change their message every 24 hours.
Obviously, the McCain camp is trying to scare people with Obama's so-called otherness. I don't think it will work except among the far right of the Republican party. People have *genuine* fears about the economy and want their next President to be reassuring and calm; two words that do NOT describe Senator Walnuts. Also, I think that this mega-smear campaign is coming too late: people have now seen Obama in two debates and he was the cool customer whilst McCain came off as cranky and frantic.
The major question about the campaign as it stands today is not whether Obama will be elected and the Democrats will gain in the House and Seante but how large the sweep will be. 25 days before the election Walnuts is trying to hang onto several states that haven't been in play in eons: Indiana, North Carolina and Virginia. The only Repub electoral college strategy that has a chance is for McCain to pray for a miracle and try to hold onto all the 2004 Bush states, which is looking more and more like a long shot. New Mexico and Iowa already appear to have gone blue.
Do I think Democrats should start celebrating? Hell no, it's time to push harder to ensure the most favorable outcome possible. The good news is that I think that the McCain-Palin campaign will keep digging the hole that they've made for themselves. The American people have wanted to fire the Republicans for several years and the economic crisis has reminded them why they want them gone.
Exactly how awful is Bill Ayers? I'll tell you. He's so rotten and evil
