BACK IN THE USSR

posted Wednesday, 13 August 2008

French President Sarko has brokered a cease fire in the Russian-Georgian crisis and I hope it sticks. LINK. Putin's puppet "President" Dimitri Medvedev surfaced and addressed the Russian people in strikingly Bushian tones: we've kicked the aggressor's ass. Blah, blah, blah. It was nice of the ventriloquist to let the dummy, who really puts the dim in Dimitri, speak. Hmm, I wonder if Vlad was drinking a glass of water offstage whilst the dummy rattled on...

Putin leads (and Medvedev pretends to lead) a revanchist/irredentist faction in Russia that remains bitter over the collapse of the Soviet Union. They very much want to go back, back, back to the USSR as well as make their enemies visit the irredentist's office for a cheka-up. <rim shot>

Here's a clip of Macca belting out Back In The USSR at Red Square in 2003. Woo:

I wonder if Putin was there shaking his white, skinny booty and singing along when Macca sang "And that Georgia's always on my my my mind." Rock, the Kremlin, Vlad, Me. I'd rather keep on rocking in the free world:

When Russia held their Soviet style military parade back in May, it was getting pretty obvious. Though the <a href="http://www.reuters.com/artic le/politicsNews/idUSN0630109020080506">US response</a> was pretty funny.

Aside from Russia's superpower envy, nationalism is a reemerging trend all across Europe right now. They all have union fatigue, and I suspect these little shows of state-level power are going to be the norm for the next decade or more. As usual, America set the trend. We're likely to elect an uber-liberal this fall after 8 years of a muslim-slayin' neo-con cowboy. But Europe is just catching up, electing their own right-wingers to reinstate their national pride and... slay those internal muslims. Russia's bombing Georgia (and can't wait to erase Chechnya), China the Uygurs. If they want to be superpowers they're gonna have to act like one - and slay muslims! :-P

"Back in the USSR" in Red Square, eh. Back when the White Album came out, who'd'a thunk it?
