The Oscars only ran an hour over and came in at a mere 3 hours and 20 minutes. That's a short broadcast for the Academy Awards, y'all. I only have a bit of snark to impart: what the hell was Nicole Kidman thinking? Didja see that chain choker/collar thing she was wearing? I think it's symbolic of the many films she's dragged down to box office failure or something equally cosmic. And those songs from Enchanted? Yikes. After hearing them I was disenchanted...
As a longtime Coen brothers fan, I'm feeling all tingly that they won a whole passel of awards. (It could even be the same feeling up my leg that Tweety gets when he listens to Obama.) I figured they'd be like Scorsese and win as geezers or get an honorary award as super geezers. I *loved* No Country For Old Men but my heart will always belong to Fargo and Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Anyway, here's a 2 year old tribute to the Coens that was made by a YouTuber named Greg Gingold. As Marge would surely say, "Oh ja, it's pretty good. You betcha." It's bona fide:
thanks for showing that. what was the black and white flick?
I had forgotten that Fargo lost to a boring English movie with "For your
consideration" as a subtitle. " Miller's Crossing" is also my favorite coen
movie.
Anyway, i wasn't that big a fan of "No Country," l guess because the novel blew it around 2/3 of the way through when the key shootout made no sense. It made sense that something like that would happen, but looking for reviews, I found that nobody was even sure who he got into the El Paso shootout with, let alone how they, or he, ended up at the motel. The movie explained that, but the explanation seemed a little contrived. Maybe it's a nitpick, but that was the shootout that resolved everything.
I have include "Raising Arizona" on my Coen Brothers list.
I haven't seen "No Country..." but I love J & E too. I saw "Blood Simple"
at the theater when they were unknowns and "Miller's Crossing" isn't just
my favorite Coen Bros film. It's one of my top five favs of all time.
Period. I haven't seen "No Country..." but I have no doubt that it's
fabulous. I can't wait until I get a moment (of privacy) and can watch the
YouTube.
Okay, knocking around the internets looking for the aforementioned black &
white film (The Man Who Wasn't There), I discovered that Joel Coen and I
share a birthday ('cept he's one itty bitty year younger).
They're probably my favorite movie makers as well, and I've seen everything
they've done (I think), so I was happy to see them get it and to see that
they still don't take themselves too seriously. Did you know that Joel's
been married to Frances McDormand since 1984 (Blood Simple)? I knew they'd
been together a while, but I didn't know it was that long.
Still got a soft spot in my heart for "The Big Lebowski": "Shomer fucking
shabbos!!!!"
Yeah, y'all're right. I swear I remember them singing in that first
Enchanted mess of a song, about hairballs in drains. Ewwww.
