A PERIOD OF TRANSITION

posted Friday, 16 February 2007

The blog looks very different this morning. Blog City has mandated that all users switch to a new system that uses widgets instead of portlets by February 21 or they'd make the changes themselves. It was like running into Conrad Veidt or Erich von Stroheim in a Forties movie: "You vill use vidgets or you vill die like ze cur you are." This cheesy dialogue, of course, is accompanied by the sound of heels clicking and a Wagnerian soundtrack. Kill the wabbitt, kill the wabbitt...

I'm not a techie so I'd never thought too much about either portlets or widgets. But I'm resigned: I've made the switch. So, the Adrastos Virtual Cafe will be in a state of flux for the next few weeks as I learn how to use the latest version. I think that, in the end, I'll prefer the new doo-hickeys but I'll be experimenting with them to get the right look. It's a bad time for a NOLA blogger to have to make radical changes: Carnival is hard work. But I didn't want to be stuck fiddling about with this stuff on Ash Wednesday so ready or not here we go.

Huh. When ya gotta switch, ya gotta switch. Blogger did the same thing to me with the "You WILL switch to the beta!"

It's a very red, white, and blue format. Wonder if you can do a purple, green, and gold on it...

What a shock! I clicked you and thought I had the wrong blog...miss your pix at the top. You must personalize it after MG. It's nice but doesn't have your fantastic personality! Sorry I missed ya'all last night.....Happy Mardi Gras!

I was sorry not to see Dr. A and you last night-- we didn't make it far enough down Napoleon. Too cold, and too many whinings from Pearlgirl.

I thought the previous color scheme was impossibly garish-- but this one tops it.

At least Blogger let us go halfway and maintain the use of our "classic templates" if we so chose. I've become too enamored with the post tags.. which Blogger insists on calling "labels" though so I'm eventually going to switch all the way over in order to get full functionality out of them. It's a pain in the ass timewise but it looks like I'll be able to maintain the creamy yellow goodness mostly unchanged.

You'll get there. I much prefer the new system. It didn't take too long to figure out. If I can help in any way, feel free to email or email for my cell number and I'll walk you through any part if you need it. I'm trying to figure out how you would have the three pics at the top in this system and that might be tricky. I am certain you could get some kind of purple, green and gold thing going if you want to. I'm sorry you're ending up dealing with all this on the heels of the "skank flu" (for which I'm sure you'll soon be the number one return on Google, if you're not already) and right at the height of Carnival. It just doesn't seem right!

So, The Youngest is now among you. According to the text message I found when I woke up this morning, he had arrived safely in your fair city. Watch out for His Handsomeness Most Charming Atlanta Boy out among the crowds. I cannot promise that he'll be well behaved in addition to being sweet and cute. In fact, I think I can promise that he will not. *sigh*

Widgets? Portlets? Wide-jets? Port-o-lets? Beats the hell out of me!

Is this why the "Calendar, etc." thingumabob (window?) is impingeing on your text (or is that the right term any more?)?

This new format is claustrophobic compared with the old. And I second the motion of a purple-green-gold color scheme...

Can you make the font a little smaller? I can almost read this size.

The first format was tres temporary; it sort of looked like red bathroom wallpaper. I had to pick something or sticking my bookmarks et al would have been much harder.

Oyster: Damn, it *was* cold. We'll wander by and see y'all on the route over the next few days.

Yeah, you right, Karen. I'm too pooped from last night to do anything about it. Gotta clean up after the locusts...
